Police seek killers of TSU student
Houston police are searching for the killers of a college student gunned down outside a restaurant this weekend.
Zhiyuan "Ryan" Chen, 26, was shot to death about 1 a.m. Sunday as he talked on his cellphone in front of the Tan Do Chinese restaurant in the 9300 block of Bellaire, according to police.
Police said witnesses told investigators that two men walked toward Chen and that one shot him several times. Both men then ran.
Investigators are trying to find more witnesses. No motive has been determined.
Chen was a student a Texas Southern University, where he was studying urban planning, said his uncle, Peter Hwang. Chen was a Chinese citizen who had come to Houston on a student visa about 18 months ago, Hwang said.
"He's here because of me, but now he's gone," said Hwang, who helped Chen come to Houston. "I feel sad."
Chen's parents, who live in southeast China, are trying to obtain visas to come to Houston for a funeral tentatively scheduled for Feb. 23, Hwang said.
The uncle said he plans to meet with police and CrimeStoppers staff Friday to ask the public's help for information about the shooting. CrimeStoppers has offered up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions in the case.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Houston police at 713 308-3600 or CrimeStoppers at 713 222-TIPS.
