Good morning and thank you for coming to remember an amazing person, my second grand aunt Ms Louey. I am the first of many Louey descendants to be born here in Australia and grow up at my second grand aunt’s side. I feel honoured to share my memories with you all, and I hope that you too will remember her fondly.
My best memory of my second grand aunt was of her cooking. From when I was little and I went to visit her she would have something tasty to eat, be it traditional foods for celebrating festivals such as ‘nian gao’, a sweet glutinous rice cake made specially for Chinese New Year or something as simple as dinner. Second grand aunt also taught me many things, the traditions of different Chinese festivals from why we made ‘zhong zi’ a sticky rice cake for the dragon boat festival to the history of some of the lesser known festivals.
My favourite was the steamed eggs, every time we went for dinner – dad would sit down and chat with my grand uncle and mum would help out in the kitchen while I just tagged along to supposedly learn how to cook – she would specially cook this dish for me. When it was time to eat, I could always feel the love she put into cooking the food for my family and I. In fact, she had the art of steaming eggs down to perfection, the dish was easily famous and well loved among us younger generation. In fact every time our cousins came down from Sydney to visit, they would ask; “Will we have steamed egg when we go to second grand aunt’s?”
Many of my other memories of her were of her making all sorts of handicrafts. Before I was born, she would knit all sorts of things for me; vests, jumpers and cardigans being some of the things. Some vests and jumpers matched my school uniform, and even now are being worn by my sister for school. I remember becoming interested in knitting because of that and telling her so. She just smiled and gave me a pair of knitting needles and a small ball of yarn, patiently showing me how to cast a stitch and how to knit, calmly helping me undo my mistakes even if it meant I had to start all over again. Later on when I showed interest in the crocheting after seeing the crocheted doilies that decorated her home, she patiently taught me how it was done, never mind the fact I never had the patience to get past the basic knit.
Ms Louey, my Grand Aunt and a great woman taught me many things that I know today that I would not have known otherwise. She was a major part of my life, a part that I will miss dearly in the future. Now I can only pray that she is happy where ever she is now. May she rest in peace.

各位亲友,我二婶母出生于广东台山县一个普通华侨家庭, 经历了民国年代, 日本占领年代, 解放前动荡时代, 解放后斗地主年代, 出走香港后经历了香港大萧条时代,其间,婶母在1949年与我叔父结婚后, 叔父随即前往澳洲打理家庭生意, 当年因澳洲白澳政策, 使夫妇分居近20年, 除在中间叔父短暂回香港相聚两次外, 直至在1968年才携独生女来到澳洲与丈头团聚, 忍受分居长达19年, 来澳洲一住就是40多年。
我自从与太太移民澳洲后, 一直受到二叔父二婶母的关怀。在二十多年的相处中,我印象中的 二婶母为人善良,勤劳勤俭,是一位既能帮助丈夫创业的好拍挡, 又是一位勤俭持家的好太太。为什么这样说呢,据我所知, 二婶出生于富裕华侨家庭, 从小家中有女佣服侍, 但二婶通常会将家里事务做到整整有条, 有时把女佣的工作也做了。二婶68年来澳洲与丈夫团聚后, 创办芽莱工厂, 更是超强劳动, 除日间正常工作外, 还要做饭给工人吃, 晚上要起床淋水, 按她后来的话来说, 大多时每天只睡两个小时。 芽莱厂的创办和成功经营是我二婶一生辛劳的见证, 用时髦话来说, 她当时是一位小生意女強人。 另外, 二婶留给我的好深印象是她那双巧手, 无论厨房做莱还是织毛衣, 还是在花园侍弄花草, 都是一等一高手。 每年逢年过节, 各侄甥都会收到二婶亲手做的地道台山糕点, 农历新年有年糕油角煎堆, 端午节有粽子, 中秋节有芋头糕, 冬至有弹牙的台山汤丸……现在这些美食美点已成美好追忆;不少亲人也收到二婶亲手打做的毛衣, 各人款式不同, 象量体裁衣一样合身, 二婶家那小小花园在她打理下四季蔬菜丰收鲜花常开, 瓜果经常丰收, 大部分还是由我们小辈们帮忙享用……这一幕幕温馨场景永远印在我们后辈的脑海里!
对待家族中后辈, 更是怀着一种忘我无私、热情关怀的精神, 令我们这些从外国移民过来的亲人后辈, 能马上站稳脚跟, 迅速溶入澳洲社会, 并各自发展自己的事业, 二婶有着不可磨灭的功劳。
