这首诗是德国二战时的一位牧师Martin Niemöller所写的。
Martin Niemöller 曾是一位纳粹党员和战斗英雄，也曾在1933年支持希特勒成为德国总理。
他在1937年因为反对希特勒而以叛国罪被捕，关进了Dachau 集中营。
这首诗也许并不代表他亲身的经历，但是这首诗却让人能反思一个社会需要容忍不同思想群体的重要性。
所有的独裁，都需要藉由压迫一些少数的群体，来杀鸡儆猴，而使多数人又觉得不干我事而不敢声援，一直到该轮到自己成了受害者。

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.
起初他们(德国纳粹党)带走共产党员，我没有说话，因为我不是共产党员；
接着他们带走犹太人，我没有说话，因为我不是犹太人；
后来他们带走工会成员，我还是不说话，因为我不是工会成员；
此后他们带走天主教徒，我仍然没有说话，因为我是新教教徒；
最后，他们来带走我，
我想反抗，但已经没有人能为我说话了。
