- Is 1 bigger than 0.999... ? [2009/03]
Is 1 bigger than 0.9999..... ? This question is as important as Goldbach Conjecture.
If 1 is bigger than 0.999..., then what is their difference? Is it 0.1, or 0.01, or 0.001, or 0.0001?
No. The difference between 1 and 0.999.... is smaller than all of these. Acutually the difference is smaller than any positive numbers. That is, 1 is not any bigger than 0.999... by any difference you can think of. Therefore, 1 is not any bigger than 0.999....
Since 1 is not smaller than 0.9999... either, 1 then equals 0.999....
That is not the direct prove that 1 equals 0.999... though, here is the prove.
Let 0.9999.…..= X (1)
Multiple both sides by 10: 9.9999.….= 10X (2)
(2) - (1): 9 = 9X
Hence X = 1
Therefore 0.99999.…… = 1
This is Mir Conjecture.
