I suspected a cashier hid my money.

This happened 10/20/13 10:45 – 11:00 a.m. at check-out station #17 at 2515 Erie Blvd Pricechopper store. The cashier is a white guy appears to be in his early 20s with glasses.

I went to sell bottles in 10/20 morning in the bottle room and got slips to go to cashers for refund.  I didn’t count the total number of slips or the total amount of money on the slips, but I remember one single largest slip is above $5, and with a total about 7-10 slips. The cashier refunded me $4.70, which surprised me.

I recall and almost exclude the possibility of losing any slip before I get to the cashier station 17.  The cashier watched how I took my slips out of my pocket of pants and roughly arranged them before I handed them over to him, based on which he might knew I didn’t know the total number of slips or amount because I wasn’t prepared.

One detail I suspected the casher is that he mostly passed one slip once and made one entry once into the register machine.  However at one point I noticed he quickly passed two slips and made one entry to the machine, and the amount he entered to the machine is 0.10 dollar shown on the screen.  Though passing two slips and mind calculating a total number, and then entering a sum to the machine appeared to be normal, it is strange in this case because none of my slips is below 0.10 dollar, and there is no such a sum of two slips as ten cents.  This detail suggests the cashier might hide one slip.  I noticed this detail at the time while I waited there, with doubt why he passed two slips but entered a sum $0.10.

About 10 minutes later after I checked out at the #17 station, at about 11:00, I went to customer service desk to tell my concern how I could not understand how one of my slips with the biggest amount disappeared.  Three staff ladies were at the desk.  One lady went to checkout station 17 to get all the bottle slips and show them to me. All about ten my slips are there, and the lady said one of the slip with $7.15 is not mine, and all the rest are mine, and there is no question that the total of those slips are $4.70.

The #17 cashier told the lady retrieving the slips that all the dozen slips are mine except one slip with amount $7.15 belong to another customer.  The $7.15 slip is probably not mine, but there are questions:  it is very rare that a customer walks to cashier to get refund with one single big bottle slip, because people who use reverse vending machines to sell bottles usually have multiple slips especially when amount is big. This is because they usually have different cans and plastic bottles and have to use more than one machine more than once. And the $7.15 slip looks questionable to me because it looks similar to all my slips: it is dirty and was folded.  When I used reverse vending machines in the bottle room, I grabbed the slips with my left hand and inserted them into my left pocket of my pants, and this is why those my slips are mostly folded and a little dirty.

The $7.15 slip might not be mine, but you may need to explain how another customer walked up to #17 station around the time I was there with one single $7.15 slip, and the slip was folded and dirty as mine.  Can the register machine record and video record show that there was actually such another customer doing such a transaction at the time?

My biggest doubt is how the cahier passed two slips but made a $0.10 entry, while the smallest slip of my slips is $0.10.  I tell this here in writing but didn’t mention this detail when I talked to the ladies at customer service desk today.  I will appreciate response.

"hid my money"? or “hide my money"?

How bottle money become focus of crime?

During recent years I sold a total about $1500 5-cent bottles in Syracuse,
and it impresses me how each store where I sold bottles stole my bottle
money.  Again, yesterday I got a bottle money issue with a Pricechopper
cashier, and for the first time I made complain to the customer service desk
.  While I have little confidence on whether the store will give me back the
money (probably $7), I would like to open a discussion on stealing people’
s bottle money because of its popularity on American soil.

Ok, thanks,

I would like to add some words here that may be good for your investigation:

The time frame such as “10:45 – 11:00 am” in the description letter I sent yesterday is not exact time, it could vary as 10:30 -11:00 am.  But the things I described in the letter is exact.

Also, the cashier didn’t issued me a receipt yesterday morning when I get refund of $4.70, though I didn’t ask him for a receipt either.  And I didn’t take note his name.

I have been feeling sick about bottle money being stolen by cashiers these years, and I know a few “professional” homeless bottlemen in Syracuse, and they have tons of negative experience about bottle money being “robbed” by bottle-return centers or cashiers of supermarkets with bottle-return service. Those cashiers involved in stealing bottle slips appear to be very experienced that they know all the key points about how to hide slips before customers’ watching eyes, and it’s not known how many times and how much bottle money they steal every year.

I am quite sure this time this cashier’s suspicion in refunding the bottle slips, though I didn’t catch him at the scene. I do prove my witness that at the 3rd or 4th data entry, he passed two slips at a time and made an entry of $0.10 to the register machine, while my smallest slip is $0.10, and there is no such a sum of $0.10 for any two slips.  Simply skipping slips is not a problem in your store because cashiers can add several slips together and enter a sum to the machine.

About ten minutes later when I talked to ladies on customer service desk, a lady retrieved all the slips from #17 checkout station that I had question and said one slip with a value of $7.15 is not mine but all the rest about ten slips are all mine with a total of $4.70.  That $7.15 slip is probably not mine, because I didn’t pay attention to the exact values of my slips, and it makes more sense for a cashier to hide a slip longer for redemption later if it is illegally taken.  The $7.15 slip looks familiar to me simply because I remember I had one slip with value above $5 from the can machine, and it is dirty and being wrapped as all my slips because when I used the reverse vending machines I grabbed each slip and inserted it into my pants pocket. Also, I sell bottles often and know roughly total value of bottles I transport to the store.  Yesterday morning the total value of bottles I sold in Pricechopper if it were $12, would make more sense to me than $4.70 because I knew roughly how much I brought in.  Though I have no way to prove the cashier skipped a $7.15 slip that was mine, if Pricechopper could offer me the $7 in any way for any reason, I will greatly appreciate.
