Carpenters 是美国 70 年代商业上最成功的柔情音乐团体之一，这是来自康涅狄格州黑文市的一支兄妹二重唱组合。哥哥Richard（生于1946年10月15日，键盘手兼歌手）和妹妹Karen（生于1950年3月2日，歌手兼鼓手）。1993年2月4日Karen 因神经性厌食症引起心力衰竭而突然逝世。《Make Believe It's Your First Time》则成为她身后留下的英国当年热门歌曲。
这首歌是卡朋特的哥哥Richard写的，歌大意如是：第一段写作者大人/卡朋特年少时很喜欢听一首歌曲，而且喜欢这首歌曲中的所有章节。中间写的是歌中之歌，描写作者所喜欢的那首歌的故事，一个缠绵悱恻的故事：一对男女相恋到分手，但是又不甘心，两人又做一对朋友，就像一见如故的那种。后来两人又在朋友和恋人之间挣扎，一会儿是朋友，一会儿是恋人，反反复复……后来，终于有一天，男孩还是又跟女孩分手了。历史重演，这伤透了女孩的心，作者听到这里，自己也哭了，原因是作者本人也有类似经历。所以应该明白作者为什么对那首歌用情之深了吧。末尾所写是作者的感受，一切就如历史在重演……
