有一位登徒子，想勾引一位丈夫回流的留守女士，送了一对名贵珍珠作为见面礼。这位洁身自好的女士把礼物退回，还附上了一首非常得体而委婉的诗，令这位登徒子知难而退：
君知妾有夫，赠妾双明珠。
感君缠绵意，系在红罗襦。
妾家高楼连苑起，良人执戟明光里。
知君用心如日月，事夫誓拟同生死。
还君明珠双泪垂，恨不相逢未嫁时。
（唐诗《节妇吟》）
好一句“还君明珠双泪垂，恨不相逢未嫁时”！诚为中文里委婉语登峰造极之作！既不让对方难堪，又表达了自己忠贞不渝的气节。
英语中的委婉语（euphemism），则别有另一番功能：
用来描述一些不够高贵的职业：
1．Prostitute (妓女)：
Street-side Sexual Distribution Specialist（街边性分配专家），Commercial sex worker（商业性性工作者）
2．Garbage collector（垃圾收集工）：
waste management expert（废料管理专家）, sanitation engineer（环卫工程师）
3．Janitor（清洁工）：
Custodial engineer（环管工程师）
4．Store Clerk（店员）：
Product Specialist（产品专家），sales counsellor（销售顾问）, customer service associate（客户服务代表）
5．餐厅侍应生（waiter/waitress）:
Hospitality Representative（服务行业代表）
6．Store security guard（商场保安）:
Loss-prevention manager（防损经理）
用来描述一些难于启齿的事物：
1． 拉肚子（diarrhea）:
Lower gastric distress （下腹部不适）
2． 便秘（constipation）:
Occasional irregularity（偶发性不正常）
3． 润滑剂（lubricant）:
Feminine Lubricating solution（女用润滑剂）
4． Second-hand clothing（二手旧衣服）：
Vintage apparel（古董服装）
用来描述一些敏感或忌讳的字眼：
1． Old people（老年人）：Goldern-Agers（金色年华人士）
2． Senior Home（养老院）：Long-term-Care Facilities（长期护理机构）
3． 偷渡客（illegal worker）: Undocumented worker（未登记劳工），global market workforce（全球市场劳力）
4． Poor People（穷人）：economically-disadvantage（经济地位不利者）
5． Slum（贫民窟）：substandard dwelling（低标准住房）
6． Motel（廉价旅馆）：Limited Service Lodging（有限度服务客栈）
7． Drug Addict（瘾君子）：Chemical dependency（化学物依赖者）
8． Crazy people（疯子）：Mentally-disturbed, emotionally-impaired（精神困扰者，情感缺陷者）
有一位耆英仙逝，其讣告写得何其委婉：
The senior citizen passed away, so the funeral director claimed the
remains of the decedent, took them to the memorial chapel and placed
them in a burial container. Grieving survivors sent floral tributes to
be displayed in the slumber room, where the grief coordinator conducted
the viewing. Following the memorial service, the funeral coach
transported the departed to the garden of remembrance where his human
remains were interred in their final resting place.”
若是实话实说，无非就是：
“老家伙翘脚了。仵工把尸体搬到殡仪馆，放进棺材里。祭奠者送花圈，向遗体告别。葬礼后，灵车把棺材运到墓地，死者的遗体入土为安。”
