有人说过，“译事如房事，还是少说多练为好。” 此语甚妙。我在拙文“翻译三境界”里提出翻译中最难境界是英翻中。许多人可能会对此论点不以为然。下面有十个句法简单而且几乎没有生词的句子，大家不妨试着看能不能将它们翻译成符合国人思维习惯的通顺流畅的汉语：
1. When it’s three o’clock in New York, it’s still 1938 in London.
2. Hollywood is like Picasso’s bathroom.
3. Los Angeles is seventy-two suburbs in search of a city.
4. New Orleans is the only city in the world you go in to buy a pair of nylon stockings they want to know your head size.
5. I woke up on the right side of the wrong bed this morning.
6. I am only seventy-five and I don’t look a day younger.
7. I base my fashion taste on what doesn’t itch.
8. The fifties were ten years of foreplay.
9. I think I am, therefore I am, I think.
10. Hope is that feeling you have that the feeling you have isn’t permanent

”当纽约已经是三点钟的时候，伦敦还在1938年”。 Bette Midler 讲的笑话，不需要什么解释。直译没有什么不妥的。中国人听不懂是因为不熟悉美式幽默。

8。我五十岁的年代是10年的前戏。(不是很清楚fifties 是指他50岁还是1950年代，需进一步查证)
