敢说是北朝鲜发动战争的房老师
昨天网上有一博客，内容是庆祝美国国庆，文章中应用了林肯在Gettysburg的一篇讲话。作者在博客用的是中文。因为这讲话是我五十七年前读的课文，当时英文老师要求读了必须能够背出来，因此到今天印象还是很深刻，当然现在只能够记得头上几句了。我上网找出原文，再通读一遍，同时过去往事又历历在目。
五十七年前是1958年，我还是青少年。当时的上海的学校高中有所谓的英文课，英文程度之低和所教内容之荒唐很难让现在的学生相信。读的句子就是Down with the landlords. The bandits Chiang kai-she。因为我父亲在香港，我准备去香港，因此英文一定要好好学，只有自己想办法请老师教。
通过朋友介绍，我找到了一位最好的英文老师，老师姓房，住在复兴西路，自己有一西式弄堂房子，他就在楼下客厅给学生上课。当时老师大概六十五左右，精神和身体看来都很好。
我是去学英文的，那老师的英文水平怎样呢。你只要知道他的经历，你就可以下结论。他的英文水平应该是上海滩最上层的了。解放前他已经是上海字林西报的编辑了。这是英国人在中国出版的历史最久的英文报纸，1850年在上海创办，主要读者是外国在中国的外交官员、传教士和商人。解放后因为是英国人的，不是美国的，所以还可以继续出版。解放后许多英国人回国了，因此房老师升为主要编辑了。能够编辑给外国人看的报纸的老师，你说他的英文怎样。
那他怎样又坐在家里教英文了呢。在给我上课时，我们也随便聊聊，他讲给我听，是朝鲜战争爆发，字林西报根据世界上多家通讯社的报道，是金日成的十三万军队向南朝鲜发起突然进攻的，报纸刊登了这消息，因此报纸被勒令停刊。字林西报被加上造谣和该报曾发表大量干预中国内政的言论的罪名。他是编辑，在报纸勒令停刊的同时，就进了提篮桥监狱，判了几年徒刑，放出来后，回到家中，属于被里弄管制的反革命。
因为是被里弄管制，他不能够随便出外，只能够坐在家里。他教我英文，还有几个学生，都是亲戚朋友介绍，对外人是不能够漏风的，否则老师学生都有麻烦了。
我跟房老师学了三年英文，每星期去三次。房老师过去不是当老师的，但是他教英文是很有一套方法，对我们学生也有许多各方面知识的指导。
这么多年过去了，再读到这课文又想到房老师，随笔写一点。

poor power to add or detract . The world will little note , nor long remember
what we say here , but it can never forget what they did here . It is for us
the living , rather , to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they
who fought here have thus for so nobly advanced . It is rather for us to be
here dedicated to the great task remaining before us——that from these honored
dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full
measure of devotion——we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have dead
in vain——that this nation , under God , shall have a new birth of freedom——and
that government of the people , by the people , for the people , shall not
perish from the earth .
