Always thought the best performance in this was by Kukrit Pramoj, the Thai actor who played the prime minister. Not many actors could steal Brando's thunder but he did in that last scene of theirs together.
Read the book many years ago, and saw the movie, but I was fascinated by not only the excellent acting but the message the movie made. The perception of America in the world has changed nearly 189 degrees since I was young. Then America was looked up to as a great friend, we could travel safely almost anywhere in the world, we represented truth and freedom for the people. Today it is dangerous for Americans to go to several country's, we are despised for our arrogance and bullying with our military might, We think we should police the world and all nations need to be a clone of us. What happened to our values? I think it started with the Vietnam War when we supported a corrupt government, that the people of that country hated, simply because that government was our puppet and we did not want the communist takeover of Vietnam. Well that country today is Communist and we trade freely with it. Vietnam's economy is growing and it's people are better off. I would rather it not have been communist but when given no other alternative were do we expect the people to turn, it was well said in the movie. Today we support ruthless dictators while condemning others, it matters not a spit about the people it matters only if they agree with our policy's. Remember Saddam was our Allie for years he just happened to get a little to independent for our liking. The same could be said for Kadafi and many others. Brando's plea at the last was great, let America get back to that spirit of the people having a say in their own government and destiny. We lost it and America is now falling apart from within. We lost our beliefs, values, and respect when the end started to justify the means.
God bless America let us hope it's not to late but it starts with cleaning up our own greedy career minded politicians.
Our second chance is still available if we will but be a country where accountability and rule of law (enforcement of ) are still Paramount under a Constitution, that is not an ever evolving document (Mr. Hussain Obama), but a fabric that holds us apart from the others who only dream of our way.
