Patricia A. Ritchie,R-Heuvelton和Joseph A. Griffo,R-Rome以及Jefferson County立法委員會成員。
Representatives of Fort Drum have once again confronted the enormous challenge of having their boss drop by for a few hours.
President Donald Trump visited the Army post in the north country Monday afternoon. He was accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence and greeted by military and community leaders.
U.S. Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Willsboro, invited Mr. Trump to visit Fort Drum earlier this year. In his remarks Monday to soldiers on the post as well as local dignitaries, the president thanked her for helping to pass the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019. He signed the bill into law while at Fort Drum.
Many elected officials from the north country attended a reception before the arrival of Air Force One. The guest list included state Sens. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, and Joseph A. Griffo, R-Rome, and members of the Jefferson County Board of Legislators.
The logistics involved in transporting the president and vice president are truly mind-boggling. Fort Drum had to make room for numerous limousines, sedans and SUVs. Then, there were the countless law enforcement vehicles on site.
The security presence was everywhere. Visitors to the post for Mr. Trump’s appearance could easily spot members of the U.S. Secret Service, military police, state troopers and sheriff’s deputies from Jefferson County.
While all conducted themselves in a friendly manner, they took their jobs seriously. Ensuring the president, vice president, elected officials and Fort Drum soldiers enjoyed a secure environment was their sole focus.
Mr. Trump’s plane, Air Force One, landed just after 2 p.m. at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield. Mr. Pence’s plane, Air Force Two, had landed shortly before 1:30 p.m.
A caravan of vehicles was employed to greet both the president and the vice president. Fort Drum substantially increased its carbon footprint this day.
It’s tempting to question whether the money and personnel are worth such an endeavor. Moving Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence to Northern New York for a portion of the afternoon is outrageously expensive. And all those involved in planning this visit certainly had much better ways to spend their time.
But while doubts can always be raised, this type of event has great value. The U.S. president holds the most responsible job of anyone in the world, and keeping him safe is essential. This requires vast resources.
In addition to serving as the chief executive of the federal government, Mr. Trump is commander in chief. The decisions he makes profoundly affect the lives of the women and men in the military along with their families.
A visit from the president boosts the morale of all those at Fort Drum. Their work is critical to safeguarding our homeland and preserving our freedoms. Having Mr. Trump come to the north country to review the troops and express his gratitude for everything they do definitely lifted their spirits.
It’s important that the president connects with those he commands. Mr. Trump’s visit will be an experience that everyone at Fort Drum who saw him will never forget. And for people who put their lives on the line throughout the year, receiving a pat on the back by their commander is a modest price to pay.
Tenney,R-New Hartford。
Twelve miles and a political world away from Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield, about 200 north country residents and assorted political operatives staged a protest against President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Willsboro, before the president landed to sign the National Defense Authorization Act at Fort Drum.
The rally was union-sponsored, with Service Employees International Union 1199 the primary organizer, but participation included members from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, New York State United Teachers, state Council of Churches and Planned Parenthood of New York.
A variety of speakers criticized the president and Ms. Stefanik over health care reductions, proposed Social Security/Medicare cuts, a lack of public school support and an administration apparently not dedicated to world peace or multinationalism.
The speakers were frequently interrupted by car horns, mostly in support but some opposed to the rally.
Lori Griffin, a Copenhagen Central School teacher and strong NYSUT supporter, had applied for a permit for the gathering, but when she found SEIU had already acted, she said she decided to “piggyback on them.”
“This is turning out great,” she said, waving her bright orange sign mocking U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos — “Trump’s rich, clueless minion is DeVostating public education!”
Among the speakers was the Rev. Peter M. Cook, executive director of the New York State Council of Churches, who came from Albany to address the rally, decrying President Trump’s isolationism and aggressive defense policies, which he said lead to a threat to world peace.
Michelle O’Donnell, a nurse from Gouverneur, spoke about the threats to affordable health care that have been enacted by the president “with Elise Stefanik’s help.” After she spoke, she said she was impressed with the crowd.
“I’ve been to a couple others before this and this crowd is larger,” she said.
Acting as the glue that bound the speakers together, SEIU upstate New York political director Mark Spadafore acted as an announcer, cheerleader and game-show personality, firing up the crowd with chants and introducing all the speakers.
SEIU communications director Allison Krause said the union was pleased with the turnout, although she lamented that there were too few “young people” at the rally.
It was a fair observation; the average age of people there trended more toward 65 than 35. But as David Duff of Macomb noted, “For a weekday morning, getting 200 out to participate is a pretty big deal.”
Mr. Duff cited a litany of his objections to this administration, and Congress in general. He said the direction the country is going frightens him.
“It’s not only me. A lot of lifelong Republicans are very disturbed with the direction (Trump) is leading this country,” Mr. Duff said.
His top concerns are growing income inequity and an apparent lack of serious concern about public education.
“Twenty-five years ago, people were making a good living. Now they aren’t,” he said. “The rich are doing just fine.”
He also objects to cuts in education spending.
“A guy said to me recently, ‘If you think education is expensive, try the cost of ignorance,’” Mr. Duff said.
James Sheridan, of Cape Vincent, said there are multiple issues that concern him about President Trump and Rep. Stefanik.
“I’m really concerned about continuing Social Security, health care, world peace and cooperation,” he said.
He cited the president’s aggressive attitude toward other nations as a threat to international cooperation.
“If we’re going to solve the world’s problems, we need the help and cooperation of all the world’s people,” he said. “Separated we will fall.”
The 78-year-old Mr. Sheridan said he is concerned about the quality of politics in the United States in general.
“I’ve lived a long time, and I’ve never seen us in this state,” he said. “Democracy is not a spectator sport. It demands strong participation, which we don’t seem to be getting.”
Many of those at the rally were expected to jump in their cars at 2 p.m., when the rally ended, to drive to Utica to protest again, this time much closer to the president, who was to highlight a campaign event for imperiled Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-New Hartford. That rally point was near to the building in which the fundraiser was held.
