The Young Savages 1961 Classic Movies.
"A district attorney investigates the racially charged case of three teenagers accused of the murder of a blind Puerto Rican boy. He begins to discover that the facts in the case aren't exactly as they seem to be."
-----Burt Lancaster was one of the greatest actors that ever lived. He's amazing.
----I saw this movie in 1961 when I was 16 years old. It was a terrific film then, and its a terrific film now. Thank you for posting this wonderful movie classic.
----his movi e is truly the best gang movie out there --it shows the real street j d ;s that were out there at the end of the 50's ---also the gangs were suppose too be the real italian redwings the badest of harlem at the time and the vicrory's p r gang from the late 50's ..........this movie for its time was what i call great ,,,,,,,,,you won't ever see them like this anymore --thats for sure
----Excellent movie, and as relevent today as it was nearly 60 years ago, with young savages still knifing each other and do-gooders still excusing and mitigating their actions. Sterling performance by Burt Lancaster. Frankenheimer also directed Big Burtie in `The Train', another of my favourite movies. Thanks very much.
----Interesting how some of the rhetoric was the same then as now. Burt Lancaster says his wife "majored in sarcasm at Vassar." Where she (according to Burt) received big fat checks from her well-heeled daddy, which presumably enables her to be a "third generation progressive" inclined to a "phony idealism" which Burt (having risen from the slums to become an attorney) couldn't afford. An early 1960s negative depiction of what would be today regarded of "elitist liberalism". Or political correctness.
----I'm Puerto Rican and here's a HUGE MISTAKE I saw in this film. The young boy playing Jose in the scene with Shelley Winters was speaking like a MEXICAN!! He had a MEXICAN accent! Any BLIND person and a Puerto Rican, Mexican or Cuban etc would've seen this shaking their heads because even they would know including Ray Charles could see that this is NOT a Puerto Rican accent. A Puerto Rican accent is DEFINITELY DIFFERENT from the Mexican. I am not surprised that they will make such an embarrassing and unacceptable mistake. This mistake has been made in films for years ans years! Not only that but the stereotype of Puerto Ricans and of all Latinos in films. The boy sounded in that scene like Speedy Gonzalez; ha! another racist character. Even the actress playing Roberto's mother was not so accurate. When I first heard her she sounded a little Italian. WHAT in the HELL were they thinking?! (THEY WEREN'T. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM) They did not do their homework when it came to that factor. Out of respect and accuracy they shouldv'e read up & listened to the Puerto Rican accent and just done that instead of treating it as if we all sound exactly the same & look exactly that same which is VERY wrong and that's foolish. I do not mean to sound like an absolute wretch beating this to death but I need to call this out. This has always been frustrating to me but unfortunately what's done is done with this one.
----So am i, Pilar Seuart was not even not Puerto Rican she was Philipino the actress who portraid her mother was Jewish. Just like the movie Westside Story the only Puerto Rican actress there was Rita Moreno Natalie Wood was Russian The one who played Rita Moreno's boyfriend was of Greek decent, to this day she hates the mention of that movie for missrepresenting Boriquas..
-----Charlie Chan was not even Chinese. Roddy McDowell was not Welsh. Don't get me started on portrayals of native Americans. Etc etc etc. That's hollywood. Suck it up.
----I hear you as a person of Puerto Rican decent we are Mixed with the Taino indians ,Africans & Europen..I would never deny my heritages
----Not quite blind, but I did notice that. The kid looks like he just crawled down off one of the pyramids at Teotihuacan. At least the leader of the Horsemen was played by Luis Arroyo, who was famous in Puerto Rico before he began finding work on the mainland. Then again, the character was nicknamed Zorro, after a fictional Mexican, and proudly claims kinship with Picasso, an Andalusian. What that does for the film's overall authenticity score I couldn't begin to guess.
----It's a movie, played by actors who followed a s***, and did a great job in telling an entertaining, hard, story. Its not a documentary, its based on a novel. Its FICTION. Its the story it portrays that's important and not the ethnicity of the actors.
----You said it! Just enjoy the damned FREE movie made over 1/2 century ago & get over the ethnicity of the actual actors for crying in the night!!! Such ignorant, ungrateful commenters!!!
----This why it's called acting. Those day movies were made on very tight budgets. No money for accents.
----- You have to remember that this was 1963. DA's don't go into Juvie and offer a 15 year old a cigarette. So the young man was meant to portray a Puerto Rican, and his accent may have been off. I actually had someone think I was from Japan and I said no China. They said "what's the difference". I then proceeded to tell him that his strawberry milkshake came from a pink cow.
----now you babble in broken English mixing metaphors and twisting logical thoughts to fit your illogical thought train. up and down can be reversed if one is laying oh their side ? go away
----You're taking this all wrong. Lighten up.
----Good God, talk about pent up hate...this is a 'MOVIE" not real life and in movies they employ "ACTORS" not the actual persons... Does the actor actually have to be an alcoholic to play an alcoholic >>>>NO>>>. Does the actor actually have to die to make the scene real<<<<NO>>> In EVERY film, play or any type of production the actors are there to "portray" a character. Most of the commenters are displaying HUGE amounts of hatred for other races and persons just because they are "ACTING and PORTRAYINIG' a character of another race or ethnicity.. and are not actually of that race, ethnicity or culture.. Take a deep breath and enjoy the story and try not to be the SJW of the comment columns..
----calm down everybody ... it's ... a ...movie, right ? I'm just glad the Black juror and cop weren't a white guys in black face
----Old New York, Kojak, great photography, good score. Entertaining.Wow, a great film. Thank you for posting.
