You see, I lived in Moscow during Chernobyl and I remember it well:
- At first there was nothing at all. But, like always in the USSR, a lot of people knew. A woman in our building was a senior chemist and she somehow knew, thus the whole building knew. They knew SOMETHING terrible was afoot, but no details.
- Then, when Europe detected the radiation, we saw a 20 second clip on our evening news - "there was an incident, everything is under control".
- And then, "suddenly" it became "a fight for motherland" with hours of video of ambulances/fire trucks lining up, helicopters flying and even talk about "space robots" (I was a kid, so that really got my attention).
- Finally there was a trial, one person was named responsible and the page was turned. Even among our friends in Moscow, there were many cancers, but no one talked about it.
- And then, a bit later, an idea was very quietly floated that... it was a CIA terrorist attack and "we" are not to blame - keep on doing what you were doing, everything was fine, everything will be fine.
So far, it seems that we're following the same scenario. Let's see if it ends the same... Remember, Gorbachev said that Chernobyl was the real reason for the USSR collapse.)
