Leaflets handed out to Edinburgh locals promoting Chinese video streaming service that was sued by YouTube
GRANTON locals have spotted some vague leaflets being handed out, promoting a Chinese video streaming service that was sued by YouTube last year.
Gan Jing World (GJW) had been reposting videos shared to YouTube without permission from the users who posted them.
The site states it promotes “wholesome content, free from gratuitous violence, sex, crime, and objectively harmful behavior”.
GJW is operated from New York and is linked to far-right multi-language newspaper The Epoch Times.
The leaflet (C) Deadline NewsYesterday, a local in an Edinburgh community group posted a picture of a leaflet advertising Gan Jing World, asking: “Anyone else get one of these?”
The leaflet reads: “Clean content for all, children too. Free from violent, erotic, criminal, and harmful content. Video sharing and live streaming platform.”
It also includes a QR code which leads you to the GJW site, which has a similar interface to YouTube, who sued them last year.
YouTube accused GJW of cloning most of their “functionalities and its overall appearance”, saying that “GJW’s imitation is anything but flattering”.
In their complaint, filed in December 2024, they also said: “Through its appropriation and use of content from YouTube’s service, GJW is tortiously interfering in contractual relationships that YouTube has with content creators, depriving YouTube and those creators of revenue they are entitled to earn from advertising in and around content on the YouTube site.”
They go on to say: “Ganjingworld Corporation is a subsidiary of Falun Dafa Gan Jing World Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization aligned with the Falun Gong ‘cult’.
“Falun Gong practitioners are asked to ‘browse [Gan Jing World] daily to increase traffic, subscribe to some channels, click the like buttons, and write positive comments’.”
Falun Gong is a new religious movement founded in China with headquarters in New York, shrouded in controversy due to its opposition of the Chinese Communist Party, who have deemed them a “cult”, and links to The Epoch Times.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, also operates in Edinburgh, parading at The Meadows Festival with a dragon dance last year.
The lawsuit against GJW is ongoing, and they have been contacted for comment.
