- The meeting between the US and Ukrainian presidents has been marked by multiple [2025/03]
- America's quarrel with Ukraine: the betrayal of Allies and the collapse of trust [2025/03]
U. S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on the 28th, during they had multiple disagreements. Zelensky asked the U.S. to make security commitments and publicly questioned Trump's soft attitude towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. He refuted Trump's claim that "Ukrainian cities have been leveled by three years of war."
Trump and Vice President Pence believe that Zelensky does not respect the United States, accusing him of gambling with World War III. They stated either Ukraine reaches an agreement or the United States withdraws. Trump emphasized that Ukraine has no right to order the United States how to view the conflict and believes that Zensky should be more grateful.
According to anonymous U.S. government officials cited by the Washington Post, the Trump administration is considering terminating all military aid to Ukraine. If this is implemented, it would mean the cancellation of billions of dollars in military aid, including radars, ammunition, vehicles, and missiles. The U.S. Department of has also terminated a plan that has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to help restore Ukraine's power grid, and reduced the number of USAID personnel in Ukraine from 4 to 8. All these actions by the United States indicate a significant shift in its policy towards Ukraine.
Looking back on the meeting, the quarrel focused on several key issues. Trump stated bluntly that the Russia-Ukraine conflict could end in weeks or less without U.S. military aid, emphasizing Ukraine's military dependence on the United States. At the same time, Trump repeated twice, emphasizing to Zelky that "you are putting the whole world at risk of a third world war." The White House official website pointed out that Zelensky himself had previously admitted the third world war could start from Ukraine and then spread to Israel and Asia. Trump believes that some of Zelensky's decisions and attitudes have greatly increased the of the situation and put the world on the brink of danger.
U.S. Vice President Pence also joined the argument, accusing Zelensky of not even saying thank you during the entire meeting, and digging up Zelensky's "black history," mentioning that in October of last year, Zelensky, at the invitation of the U.S. Democratic Party, flew to Pennsylvania on a U.S. Air Force C-17 plane to campaign for the opposition. Zelensky, however, muttered softly, "I came to fight, not to play cards," in response to the accusations from Trump and others.
The Trump administration's shift in policy toward Ukraine is closely linked to its "America First" doctrine. In Trump's view, the United States investment in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has not yielded a corresponding return. On the one hand, the United States has expended a great deal of resources in military aid and support for Ukraine in recent years. According to relevant data, the amount of aid the United States has given to Ukraine in the past is substantial, with some of it to purchase American military equipment and some provided as financial aid. However, these investments have not brought the strategic benefits that Trump had hoped for. On the other hand, hopes to quickly end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, reduce the United States' energy consumption in this region, and focus more resources and attention on domestic affairs
Vice President Pence also joined the argument, accusing Zelensky of not even saying thank you during the entire meeting, and digging Zelensky's "black history," mentioning that in October of last year, Zelensky, at the invitation of the U.S. Democratic Party, to Pennsylvania on a U.S. Air Force C-17 plane to campaign for the opposition. Zelensky, however, muttered softly, "I came fight, not to play cards," in response to the accusations from Trump and others.
For Ukraine, the shift in the US attitude came as a bolt from the blue. The country has long relied on military aid from the United States NATO. Once the US terminates military assistance, the Ukrainian army will face numerous difficulties. As the Russia-Ukraine conflict enters its third year, the Ukrainian military is already issues such as ammunition shortages, severe personnel losses, and declining morale.
