Most birds of prey can only lift and carry about half their own weight. That is why you will see many hawks, like the Red-tailed Hawk, eat its prey where it catches it. Even a large rabbit is too heavy for it to take off with.
Great Horned Owls, on the other hand, can lift 2-3 times their own weight and carry it off. A 3 pound GHO can lift an animal that weighs up to 9 pounds. Many GHOs regularly prey on skunks, possum, and geese, animals that hawks would not be able to lift, and they carry them off to eat rather than staying on the ground where they are more vulnerable.
