YANGTZE REPERTORY THEATRE OF AMERICA NEWS
New Bilingual drama by Yangtze Rep's Artistic Director Joanna Chan, commissioned by Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, to have world premiere in Hong Kong January 15, 2011 followed by American premiere in New York in June, 2011.
"The Empress of China" is based on the story of the first trading ship from the US to reach China in 1784. The play is an emotional voyage in which two worlds meet and find each other.
In the prosperous port of an ancient empire, during the powerful reign of Qianlong, handsome First Officer Samuel Shaw meets wealthy merchant's daughter Purple Lotus. Although few words are exchanged, they find each other through the language of faith and honesty.
With this world premiere, Hong Kong Rep's second Artistic Director, Joanna Chan, makes a much-anticipated return to her home stage.
Joanna Chan is co-founder and Artistic Director of New York's Yangtze Repertory Theatre of America.
