     莫里森伯爵是在第一次世界大战结束不久从法兰西迁到休斯敦的。市区西首不远处离梅摩尔公园最近的一栋橘黄色外墙的豪宅就是他们的住家。

    休斯敦市中心的街道都是顺着梅恩大街修建的,南北向的跟它平行,东西向的跟它垂直。整个市区被切成方方正正的豆腐块。谁也没有追究梅恩大街的真正走向。可是如果站在梅恩大街和布法罗百幽河的交接点上,先是沿布法罗向西看,然后再沿着大街看两头,你会发现好似站在一支箭的箭头上。布法罗是箭身,大街形成箭尖。这是因为梅恩大街从交点处向南向北都往西布法罗偏了30多度。

    倒是布法罗两岸蜿蜒向西的艾伦大道和梅摩尔车道的大方向反而是名副其实的从东到西,因为它们是沿着布法罗的走向修建的。

    梅摩尔车道在布法罗的北岸,穿过梅摩尔公园。

    那是全美最大的市区公园之一。听说公园所在地第一次世界大战期间曾经是一个军训营。成千上万的士兵在那儿接受训练。一战以后,那块地先是被霍格(HOGG)家族买下来,到1925年才又转让给市政府。霍格家族以很低廉的价格卖给政府只有一个条件:把她建成一座对公众开放的公园。这个公园叫做梅摩尔,就是为了纪念在一战中牺牲了的士兵。梅摩尔,MEMORIAL的音译,就是“纪念”的意思。

    莫里森伯爵当年移迁休斯敦一点儿也不是因为休斯敦发现了大油田,他们是冲着那个军训营来的。

    事情的原委是这样的。伯爵除了一个女儿曾经有过三个儿子。一战爆发以后,伯爵自己上了前线(所以许多人也称他莫里森将军),还把儿子们都送上了战场。不幸的是,两个儿子都在法兰西的战场上阵亡了,只有小儿子布鲁斯被派到美国的军训营带兵。未曾想当军训营的士兵们奔赴法兰西参战的时候,他们被告知小莫里森来到美国不久就染上瘟疫丧了命。

    所以,虽说法兰西是战胜国,可是战争给莫里森家族却留下了难以愈合的创伤。伯爵夫人一直不愿意承认她的小儿子已经命丧黄泉,所以战争一结束,埋葬了两个儿子的尸体,就找到当年的那个军训营来了。伯爵夫人没有过多的奢望,她只是想活不见人,但是死得见尸。

     光阴似箭。莫里森家族举迁休斯敦一晃就是半个世纪。遗憾的是,伯爵太太的愿望到临死也没有实现。

well, one of few good memories for huston is that memorial park. i used to hang around there with few friends at weekends..

the options for chinese food is another one...

Yes, it is a beautiful park.  People living near by often take  a walk there everyday.  We had a couple of picnics there in Spring.

Bayou was translated as 牛轭湖 in English-Chinese dictionary.  But I like 百幽 better.

bayou is a word in houston for those man-made rivers that are used to divert flood during the raining seasons...

when you drive around houston, you would see bayous everywhere, usually have no water or very little in them. but once raining season start, those bayous would be quickly filled up with flooding water. the problem for houston's bayou system is that it is kind hard for the system flash water out since houston area was a marshy land before.

It seems to me Bayou is natural (lake?).  However, in order to develop the Houston ship channel, Buffalo Bayou and Galveston Bay were widened and deepened, and a canal was dredged to connect these
two rivers.

those bayous are not natural. they were built to drain the flood out, not for any other purpose.

houston floods every year during the raining seasons. bayous are key infrastructure to contain the flood...

well, the revival of the galveston has been in talks for years..
